Dan Tanasă mocked the Hungarian language in Parliament

Another outrageous anti-Hungarian outburst was heard in the Romanian Parliament. This time, AUR MP Dan Tanasă attacked the linguistic rights of the Hungarian community in Romania, speaking during the plenary session of Parliament in a tone unworthy not only of the legislature of a European Union member state, but of any democratic public life.

The debate concerned a legislative amendment submitted by the RMDSZ, aimed at preserving language-use rights previously guaranteed to national minorities even if, according to the results of a later census, the proportion of the community were to fall below the threshold established by law. In essence, this legislative initiative seeks to ensure the continued linguistic rights of Hungarians living in dispersed communities, based on the principle that a community should not be deprived overnight of a linguistic right it has already acquired.

AUR Bill: Mandatory Patriotism, Fines Tailored and Aimed at Hungarians

Our organisation learned with alarm that AUR has submitted to Parliament a bill that would make the expression of patriotism mandatory, and which, moreover, has already passed tacitly through the upper house of the Romanian Parliament. The parliamentary initiative in question would not only prescribe the mandatory celebration of Romanian Flag Day, but would also oblige central and local officials present at the event to kiss the Romanian tricolour in protocol order. Those who refuse to do so, or stay away, would be fined between 5,000 and 10,000 lei.

The bill goes even further: radio and television broadcasters would be required to dedicate at least 30 minutes of airtime to Flag Day, and failure to do so could be punished with fines of between 10,000 and 20,000 lei. In Bucharest and in every county seat, a public space called “Piața Tricolorului” would be created, with a 30-metre flagpole, while ceremonies would be made compulsory in schools, military units, as well as embassies and consulates, among others. The bill would also prescribe the placement of the flag inside churches and its blessing as part of a religious ceremony, which raises serious questions from the point of view of church autonomy and freedom of religion as well. If we want to call the nature of the bill by its name, all of this is distinctly reminiscent of Legionary ideology.

A Priest Evicted from Church Property in Oradea After Authorities Broke Through a Wall

As highlighted in our previous newsletter regarding the eviction of the Premonstratensian abbot in Oradea, the developments that have since unfolded further underscore the gravity of the situation. They make it even clearer that this case is not merely a legal dispute, but also a matter of the enforcement of rule‑of‑law guarantees and the genuine protection of historical church communities.

As is known, the case of the Oradea Premonstratensian monastery has generated significant public and ecclesiastical attention in recent months. The authorities previously initiated the eviction of the order’s abbot, citing a final court ruling and a public‑interest investment, raising serious concerns about the legal security of historical church communities. At the heart of the conflict lies the municipality’s position that both the monastery and the adjoining school building are the property of the city, a stance it seeks to reinforce through EU‑funded renovation plans.

Provocations and Incitements Against the Hungarian Community During Pentecost

The Mikó Imre Legal Aid Service finds Dan Tanasă’s latest anti-Hungarian statement deeply outrageous, this time made in connection with the restoration of the Rákóczi Castle in Gyimesbükk (Ghimeș-Făget). The AUR member of parliament once again made remarks that not only attack the historical and cultural heritage of the Hungarian community in Romania, but also deliberately contribute to fueling ethnic tensions.

It is especially concerning that all this happened precisely during the Csíksomlyó pilgrimage, when hundreds of thousands of people take part in religious pilgrimage and spiritual reflection. While believers were celebrating peacefully, nationalist and anti-Hungarian actors once again used the occasion for provocation. Mihai Tîrnoveanu, leader of the radical organization Calea Neamului, posed with a Romanian flag at the Rákóczi Castle in Gyimesbükk (Ghimeș-Făget) and sent a message to Hungarians heading to Csíksomlyó in an obviously provocative tone intended to humiliate the Hungarian community.

Mikó Imre Legal Protection Service: Simion should not deny his involvement in the desecration of the Úz Valley cemetery and should apologize

The Mikó Imre Legal Protection Service has learned with shock and outrage that George Simion, president of the AUR, is attempting to downplay his active involvement in the cemetery occupation incident that took place at the military cemetery in the Úz Valley. During the incident, a violent crowd—of which Simion was also a member—forced open the cemetery gate, assaulted peaceful Hungarian individuals who were praying and defending the cemetery, and then played Romanian folk music, climbed onto the crosses, and waved flags to the rhythm of the music.

Our Service once again draws attention to the fact that, despite having successfully won all legal cases, and as a result the municipality of Dărmănești being compelled to remove the unlawfully erected crosses, the extremist, virulently anti-Hungarian and fascist organization that serves as the civil wing of the AUR, namely Calea Neamului, erected new crosses in the cemetery after the final court ruling, blatantly disregarding the law. As a result, these illegal crosses remain present in the cemetery despite the court having clearly declared them unlawful.
