The Mikó Imre Legal Protection Service has learned with shock about the serious incidents following Monday evening’s city derby in Cluj, during which Universitatea Cluj ultras attacked several CFR supporters, including Hungarian minors.
According to press reports and published photos, 15-20 masked attackers ambushed young fans on the street as they were heading home from the stadium. The brutal attack happened suddenly, and one victim suffered such severe injuries that his nose was broken, and wounds on his face required stitches.

B.K., an athlete from CSM Târgu Mureș, encountered a serious case of discrimination during the Romanian national team’s training session on February 14, 2025. The training took place in Chișinău, and the incident was directly linked to D.Z., the coach of the Romanian freestyle wrestling team.
B.K., a member of the Romanian national team, was wearing a training shirt depicting Hungary during the session. Coach D.Z. instructed him to remove the shirt and wear only equipment displaying the Romanian national team emblem. According to B.K., this request was unfair, as other athletes, including a teammate wearing an emblem representing the United States, were not given a similar warning.Read more…
Kelemen Hunor, president of the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (RMDSZ), has drawn attention to yet another anti-Hungarian bill. According to him, the House of Representatives’ cultural committee recently had on its agenda a draft bill initiated by the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR), which, similar to previous proposals, would introduce a so-called “Day of Respect” for members of national minorities.

The Mikó Imre Legal Protection Service became aware of a shocking incident involving a Hungarian family in Cluj-Napoca. On February 2, 2025, the member of a Hungarian family dialled the emergency number 112 after her mother’s friend became ill. The 68-year-old man showed symptoms of a stroke, so an ambulance was called.
According to the person who initiated the emergency call (Sz.Cs.), the doctor instructed her in a rather irritated tone to stop using Hungarian when she was trying to calm the elderly man on his mother tongue. Later, the doctor also demanded Romanian-language communication when the daughter explained the situation to her hard-of-hearing mother in her native language.

Călin Georgescu, former presidential candidate, launched an aggressive attack against the organization representing the interests and political rights of Hungarians in Romania, RMDSZ/UDMR/DAHR, employing typical far-right and legionary rhetoric.
Georgescu revived a popular narrative among Romanian extremist groups, when suggesting that the political representation of Hungarians should be banned. He also clearly referred to the Hungarian ethnicity of Romania’s current Minister of Finance, Tánczos Barna, when he criticized the “current system” for allowing someone with dual citizenship, specifically a Hungarian, to hold the position of Finance Minister. This is a clear incitement and threat against the Hungarian community, implying that a Hungarian person cannot serve as Finance Minister in Romania solely due to their ethnicity.
