As we have reported in our last two newsletters, the local administration of the village of Dărmănești/Dormánfalva has appropriated a Hungarian military cemetery located in neighbouring Harghita county. The situation has worsened considerably after several Hungarians have been taken in for questioning by the police, while the local administration of Dărmănești/Dormánfalva that put up crosses and monuments in the cemetery illegally has still not been brought to account.
Five persons of Hungarian ethnicity have been questioned by the police last week, among them the deputy mayor of Sânmartin/Csíkszentmárton. Following this, a gathering was organised in solidarity on the 25th of May in Sânmartin/Csíkszentmárton, attended by hundreds of people from Szeklerland, including dozens of members of the Szekler Council of Local Representatives, as well as its leadership.
According to a decision taken by the Council in Sânmartin/Csíkszentmárton, various local councils from Covasna, Harghita and Mureș counties will hold extraordinary meetings in Valea Uzului/Úz-völgye on each day starting this week, wishing to send a message that they do not accept double standards.
“We, Transylvanian Hungarians, are citizens with full rights of both Europe and Romania, and we do not accept to be treated as second-class citizens in our homeland. Asking for the situation of the military cemetery in Valea Uzului/Úz-völgye to be settled, for the violation of the rights of our community to cease and for those responsible to be brought to justice is a legitimate demand, one that we will not give up” – declared Árpád Antal, the president of the Szekler Council of Local Representatives.
The first local administration to hold a symbolic extraordinary meeting in Valea Uzului/Úz-völgye will be the local council of Sfântu Gheorghe/Sepsiszentgyörgy on Tuesday.
